Iain Mac Labhrainn (MacLaren) Labhrainn (MacLaren)

Iain is the Director of the Centre for Excellence in Learning & Teaching (CELT) in NUI Galway. His original academic background was in Physics, but he has always been interested in teaching and has experience in online, blended, and 'traditional' teaching in higher education in a number of universities in the UK and Ireland. He was one of the first Principal Fellows of the Higher Education Academy and is a co-author of 'Reflective Teaching in Higher Education' which is used as a core text in many Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma programmes in HE teaching. He was also, for many years, a volunteer tutor in adult literacy and numeracy, an experience which has shaped his perspectives on learning. He has an enthusiasm for technologies, but also is sceptical about some of the over-promising of product vendors and advocates, believing that it is good learning design and committed teaching that makes the difference in education.
