Syed Nazakat

Syed Nazakat, India, is an award-winning journalist, media entrepreneur, founder and CEO of DataLEADS, a tech and digital media company he founded to promote open data and democratisation of information at scale. He has spearheaded one of the world’s biggest fact-checking and information literacy training networks which have resulted in the launch of many fact-checking initiatives, in multiple languages, and has benefited hundreds of institutions, media colleagues and more than 2000 newsrooms across Asia. He is the founder of First Check, a unique global fact-checking platform of doctors and journalists working together to address health misinforming, and he leads FactShala, a pan-India community intelligence initiative against disinformation. More recently, he led Google-supported Shakti Project in India in which 300+ fact-checkers, publishers and technologists successfully collaborated and fact-checked the largest election in history, at scale. He was a jury member on Google’s COVID-19 Vaccine Counter-Misinformation Open Fund and currently serves as a board member of GIJN (Asia) and a Working Group Member on AI and the Information space by FORUM SUR L'INFORMATION ET LA DÉMOCRATIE, France. He has reported from over 30 countries and has worked in senior positions at different media organisations.
