Alexander Smit

Dr Alexander Smit is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Groningen and the program manager of the Digital Literacy Coalition. In his research, Alex focuses on topics such as how different disadvantaged groups in society experience digital exclusion and socio-digital inequality, how young adults understand, value and interpret news and information within their everyday lives, how digitalisation affects the democratic participation of low-literate adults, and how digital illiteracy may influence their socio-economic positions and relations within society. Alex also examines how different subgroups in society understand, conceptualise, and practice digital literacies in their everyday lives; which aspects of contemporary digital literacy frameworks they find problematic and/or important in their civic activities, and what is needed to foster a truly inclusive and just digital society for all.
